A letter to our families on the EMEA’s intent to strike vote

Re: EMEA Intent to Strike Date
Date: February 1, 2017

Dear Parents:

On Monday, January 23rd, 2017, members of the East Moline Education Association (“EMEA”) voted to provide an “Intent to Strike” notice to the Board of Education. Under Illinois law, the EMEA may not engage in a legal strike unless it has provided District 37 with this notice and at least ten days have passed. We have received that notice and so has the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board and the Regional Office of Education. The earliest possible date for a legal strike is Friday, February 10, 2017.

The EMEA has not requested another bargaining session, and we do not know if they plan to resume negotiating before going on strike. Of course, the Board of Education is always willing to continue bargaining to reach a fair and financially responsible agreement with the EMEA.

If a strike appears to be imminent, the Board will let you know more as soon as possible. You can find information about the contract negotiations and the possibility of a strike on the District’s website at http://www.emsd37.org/negotiations/index.cfm  You can also find the District on social media at https://twitter.com/EMSD37 and https://www.facebook.com/EMSD37. If those resources do not answer all your questions, you can also call or email your school’s principal.

We are very concerned about the impact this will have on our students and are working with social service agencies to provide food assistance if the EMEA decides to strike. We will have more information for our families next week.

The Board of Education has worked hard to negotiate a fair contract with the EMEA. As always, the Board of Education is willing to bargain with the EMEA when they decide to come back to the table.

Thank you,

Kristin Humphries, Superintendent
