-8th graders interested in playing football at UTHS next year can attend weightlifting. These are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at UT from 3:15 to 4:30pm. Make sure your rides are ready at 4:30.

We came a long way. But we got a long way to go.” These lyrics belong to rap icon Master P. Him and his son Romeo mention several prominent blacks such as Bessie Coleman, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and Medgar Evers throughout their music. Master P displayed his full evolution from street hustler to music mogul to mouthpiece for social injustice. He rapped about the advancements of African-Americans in the country and the work that lies ahead.

Due to anticipated winter weather conditions, all after school activities at Glenview are being cancelled for this evening. This includes athletics, clubs, Lights on for Learning, and after school detention. Detentions scheduled for today will be served on Tuesday, February 21st, after school.
This does not affect the YMCA after school child care.

-Here is today’s moment in Black History: George Crum was working as a chef at a resort in New York. A customer sent his dish of french fries back to the kitchen, claiming that they weren’t good. In an irritated fit, Crum cut the potatoes as thinly as possible, fried them until they were burnt crisps, and threw a generous handful of salt on top. Thus, the chip was born.

-Here is today’s moment in Black History Supreme Court Justice: Thurgood Marshall was the first African American ever appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. He was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson and served on the court from 1967 to 1991.

-This week’s moments in Black History: Nanak Aqeel, 14, fought for a national rule change to allow student athletes to compete wearing hijabs. After being disqualified from a junior varsity volleyball game for wearing a hijab, she worked with the ACLU of Tennessee to urge the state’s volleyball association to change its rules to allow religious head coverings. The state association agreed, and the National Federation of State High School Associations followed suit, clearing the way for hijabi athletes nationwide.

-This week’s moments in Black History: Grace Moore, 12, is one of the youngest composers for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. She composed an original piece inspired by the global Black Lives Matter protests happening within the coronavirus pandemic (aptly named Summer), and it was performed by one of the top orchestras in the world.
We will be holding our winter parent-teacher conferences this Thursday evening (February 9th) and Friday morning (February 10th). Teachers have reached out to parents with whom they need to discuss student progress. Parents are also welcome to schedule a conference by calling the school, emailing your child’s teacher, or walking in during conference hours.
